Darryl Shek (S5) was invited to attend the 2016 SCIS Chemistry Masterclass on 12th January 2016 at the University of St Andrews.
He was able to carry some organic synthesis of molecules with biologically significant structures. He examined the Benzoin reaction of benaldehyde to give benzoin.
The methodology employed focused on developing a more environmentally friendly catalyst in this carbon to carbon bond forming reaction. Subsequently the molecule was analysed with the use of analytical facilities (NMR, mass spectroscopy and IR).
We would like to congratulate Darryl on his success.
