Pupils compete at mini -Olympics

Primary pupils welcomed two special guests to their very own Rio Olympics-inspired athletics festival last Friday – Commonwealth Gold medalist gymnast Steve Frew and Olympic judo star Sarah Clark.

The Sky Sports Living for Sport Ambassadors chatted with pupils as they took part in the mini-Olympics event which saw P4-P7 children compete in a number of sporting activities – including synchronised swimming, archery and kayaking.

Steve and Sarah were keen to promote the Six Keys to Success – Part of the Sky Sports Living for Sport initiative and held a workshop with some of the pupils where they spoke about their own successful sporting careers.

They told the pupils that mental toughness, a hunger to achieve, excellent people skills, sport and life knowledge, breaking barriers and planning for success were essential qualities to make it to the top in sport.

Thirty teams of p4-7 pupils took part in 15 different events and the day culminated in a medal presentation in front of a replica Christ the Redeemer statue.

Steve said: “It was an amazing day and all the children involved showed great sporting spirit.”
