The Hutchesons' Community

The school is governed by an educational trust, with governors who represent Parents, Glasgow universities, associations and other charitable bodies. In addition, co-opted governors bring expertise in law, education, industry and finance.

While day-to-day matters at the school and its direction for the future are managed by the Rector through the teaching and support staff, the primary and secondary pupil councils enable pupils to influence the running of their school. A flourishing School Association with membership made up of parents and staff, is complemented by an extensive network of Former Pupil groups.

Prefects are chosen in S6 by ballot among their peers and the teaching staff. They play an important role in maintaining the ethos of the school, and are led by a Head Boy and Girl and their Deputes.

Parents also play an important part in their children's education, supporting them and being encouraged to interact with and be part of the school community, by attending concerts, plays, exhibitions and sporting events.

A comprehensive programme of reports and parents' evenings, along with regular newsletters, keep parents informed about their child and the school as a whole. The school website, and its impressive intranet, is fast becoming an even quicker route to participation and communication within the whole community.

Although non-denominational, there is ample scope for a spiritual dimension within the school. There are compulsory secular and religious assemblies of various types throughout the week, and the school is proud of the diversity of faith and ethnic groups represented within it.

Pupils are encouraged to look to those less fortunate than themselves, and from P1 to S6 all pupils are involved annually in fundraising for the school's nominated charity, chosen by the Charities Committee. Pupils and staff organise a wide range of events throughout the year, and typically raise well over £35,000.
