In the early years at Hutchesons', children discover that to be a pupil means exploring, asking questions, and finding answers. When your children start in Primary 1 at Hutchesons', expect them to forge ahead quickly, and be prepared to join in with them on the journey!
Alongside classroom teaching based broadly on the 5-14 national guidelines, our pupils expand their horizons with specialist help from staff from the art and craft, modern languages, ICT, music, and PE departments. Under the watchful eye of experienced teachers, they will first rigorously develop the essential building blocks of reading, writing, and arithmetic. As they grow older, and their knowledge and learning skills become more sophisticated, our pupils are challenged and encouraged all the way.
During the week, pupils will have timetabled PE and games, but can opt for more at lunchtimes and after school. Large numbers learn and play musical instruments, and many participate in activities like chess, debating, drama and Spanish, which reflect a huge range
of interests. The whole school enjoys the many events which support our ambitious charity fundraising.
We encourage parents, friends, and other guests to visit Kingarth Street, and pupils and teachers often venture out on trips and tours around the city and beyond to foster an understanding of the outside world. As pupils progress through the primary school, they will assume increasing amounts of responsibility for themselves and in their interaction with others, as well as in their academic development. They will gain a confidence that allows them to appreciate their own strengths and weaknesses, and they will be ready to move to the next stage.
For the past seven years of my life I have been to one of the best primary schools in Glasgow. Hutchesons' Grammar School is a second home to me. I can still remember my first day. I cried and cried until I realised what a wonderful place Hutchie is.
There is a natural and automatic progression to the secondary school after P7, although all pupils will prepare for and sit the S1 entrance exams taken by external candidates.
