Primary Curriculum

Hutchesons' Grammar Primary School, which has 550 children in Primary 1 to Primary 7, is on Kingarth Street, just under a mile from Hutchesons' Grammar Secondary School. Originally built as Hutchesons' Girls Grammar School in 1912, the Primary School matches the grandeur of the original building with enhanced facilities for a 21st century education.

Hutchesons' Primary provides a happy, purposeful and well structured context for the academic, social and emotional development of all its pupils. Admission is by selection, at Primary 1 and Primary 5, but occasional vacancies arise in other years.

Through high-quality teaching and our wide-ranging curriculum, we strive always to deliver ever higher academic standards and to give all pupils a thorough grounding in the core subjects to equip them for future life.

In the early years, a strong emphasis on Mathematics and Language forms the foundation for confident and successful development across the curriculum, which covers Environmental Studies, Information and Communication Technology, Religious and Moral Education, Personal and Social Education and Health. In many areas, such as Art, PE and Music (all taught from Primary 1), Games, ICT, and Modern Languages and Latin, our pupils benefit from expert teaching by specialists.

The rich mix of drama, musical productions, sport and many extra-curricular activities enriches and builds on all that is achieved by our pupils in the more formal areas of the curriculum, providing all pupils with the confidence and the tools to move on to the Secondary School.

We are fortunate in having a large network of dedicated support staff and classroom assistants, who work in the playground, classrooms, lunchroom, School Office and After School Club.
