From the very first days of Primary 1, children are encouraged to enthusiastically join in with singing, playing and listening activities. As they move up the school, opportunities open up for learning an instrument and participating in the numerous performances and concerts, shows and assemblies, workshops and demonstrations which take place throughout the year supported by the teaching, practice and rehearsals that go into the varied musical life of the school.
Two full-time music specialists and 18 instrumental teachers ensure that every child will not only explore a wide range of musical experiences during their class time of an hour a week in the well-resourced department, but will also be encouraged to take part in the extensive extra-curricular programme which fills teaching and practice rooms with music during school hours and at every break and lunchtime.
I am proud of my cello because this Saturday I am doing my Grade 2
Many pupils receive individual lessons on the instrument of their choice, and participate in rehearsals for performances, auditions or music exams. They also play in the ceilidh band, choirs, wind and rock bands, and string ensembles which rehearse every week. The highlights of our year are the Primary 1 and Primary 7 Shows, Scottish Opera's visit to Primary 6 pupils (see photo on the right), our School concerts in November and March, and the Performance Evenings and Art and Music Evening in the summer term.
I adore music. The sounds are like words talking to me. My favourite instruments are the clarinet, violin, piano, recorder and the guitar, because they're the instruments I play!
Eagerness to participate, enthusiasm for many different kinds of music and, above all, the pleasure and fun of making music together are what the Music Department aims to achieve.
