The School looks after the children in its care in many different ways.
The primary and secondary sites each have a school Matron. Mrs Evelyn Phillips (primary) and Mrs Kirsty Reid and Mrs Jane Johnstone,(secondary) are all Registered General Nurses. They staff well-equipped medical rooms, dealing with pupils who are injured injured, unwell or suffer from a medical condition. They will administer medications and liaise with parents when necessary. or feel poorly and liaising with parents if a child needs to home. Outside class-time, pupils often find it useful to speak to Matron about health matters which worry them.
The matrons are happy to discuss the appropriate emergency treatment with those parents who have intimated on the pupil health details form that their son or daughter suffers from Asthma, Epilepsy, Diabetes or Anaphylactic Shock. The matrons work alongside the School Health Service who deliver vaccination programmes and screening to school age children. They keep staff informed, when appropriate, about pupils who have medical conditions. They also deliver training to staff, for example in the handling of allergy treatment.
The blood transfusion bus visits the secondary site twice a year and pupils aged 17 and over and staff are encouraged to donate blood.
Physical Education at Hutchesons' is an important way of encouraging pupils to take their health seriously, with fitness high on the priority list. All PE staff are fully trained First Aiders, as are several other members of teaching and support staff.
The classroom teacher is a good monitor of the well-being of pupils both in Primary and Secondary divisions of the school. The pastoral teams at Beaton Road interview all pupils individually and with the Form teachers keep a watchful eye on the pupils in their care.
