Health and Well-being at Hutchesons'

The School looks after the children in its care in several different ways.

There are three school matrons, who are all Registered General Nurses. Mrs Evelyn Phillips is at Kingarth Street and Mrs Kirsty Reid job-shares with Mrs Jane Johnstone at Beaton Road. They staff well equipped medical rooms, dealing with a variety of daily illnesses, sports injuries and any medical conditions that pupils may have. They will administer analgesia, prescribed medications and give appropriate treatment as documented in the Parents' handbook, liaising with parents if further attention is advised. Parents are also able to discuss with the Matron ongoing treatment for diagnosed conditions which they have intimated on the Pupil health detail form.

The Matrons work closely with the School Health Services, who carry out Immunisation and screening programmes throughout Glasgow. Teaching and Support staff are kept well informed about a pupil's health, where appropriate, and training on emergency procedures is carried out by Matron as and when required.

All three Matrons have received up-to-date training on defibrillation and there is a defibrillator on both sites should this be required.

All PE staff are trained First Aiders, but the Matrons are on duty until 5pm at Beaton Road to deal with emergency situations during games. Any injuries to Primary children at Beaton Road are cared for initially on site then by Mrs Phillips on their return to Kingarth Street.

The classroom teacher is also a good monitor of pupils' well being. The pastoral teams work closely with the matrons, sharing information where appropriate, to ensure an holistic approach to the health and well being of all pupils.
