Instrumental Tuition

Music tuition

Outside its role in the curriculum, music plays a significant part in the life of the school, in public concerts, informal workshops, competitions and drama productions. There are many opportunities to take part in choirs and instrumental ensembles of various sizes and at every age, ability and aspiration.

Pupils are particularly encouraged to consider learning a musical instrument. If uncertain about which instrument to take up, members of the music department are always happy to advise.

Tuition is available in the following instruments:

Keyboard:
Piano

Strings:
Violin; viola; cello, double bass; guitar

Woodwind:
Flute; oboe; clarinet; bassoon; saxophone

Brass:
Trumpet; trombone, French horn; euphonium; tuba

Percussion:
Orchestral percussion; drum kit

Scottish traditional:
Bagpipes; Scottish drums

Weekly lessons are provided by visiting specialist teachers. Pupils are extracted from ordinary classes to attend these lessons and are charged separately for that tuition:

  • PRIMARY Lessons are arranged on a rota basis in P4-P7 and at fixed times in P2 and P3.
  • SECONDARY  Lessons are arranged on a rota basis in S1-S3 and at fixed times in S4-6 (outwith academic options). Pupils in the Secondary School have the additional opportunity to receive singing lessons.
