Career Development and Higher Education

Pupils have many choices, linked to career development, to make throughout their time at school and beyond.

Our aim is to assist them in making decisions based on first-class information. Pupils are encouraged, at all stages, to develop self-awareness in order to make the very best of their individual talents and skills.

Wise decisions are based on knowledge and experience, which is why we encourage pupils to participate with enthusiasm, and to grasp the many opportunities that are available.

Careers Convention

The Careers Convention takes place every March at the Secondary School. For S4 pupils, it is a particularly important event. More than 100 volunteer consultants make themselves available for interviews with the pupils on a one-to-one basis or in small groups. This evening event has always been successful and is appreciated by pupils, parents and consultants alike.

Higher Education Fair

The Hutchesons' Higher Education Fair for S5 and S6 pupils takes place every June and is attended by representatives from all the Scottish universities and several from England and Wales.

S2 Pupils

To help S2 pupils make the very best decisions, they participate in a variety of events designed to make them think carefully about their options:

  • "Make it In Scotland", organised by Career Scotland, gives all pupils an insight into manufacturing in its widest sense.
  • "Career Compass" and "Explorer" computer programs help pupils to become more self-aware.
  • Individual interviews, with the Year Tutor or a member of the CD & HE Department, encourage pupils to discuss their Standard Grade choices.
  • In addition, parents are given a flavour of their children's experiences at a special "Focus Evening" in June.

S4 Pupils

Hutchesons' is a member of the Independent Schools Career Organisation and career advice provided by ISCO continues until the age of 23.
