Music facilities at Hutchesons' are superb and large numbers of pupils learn to play a musical instrument. There are ample opportunities for performance and there is an ensemble or choir for every interest and skill level from P2 through to S6. The standard of instrumental playing, both individually and in groups, is impressively high throughout the school.
Every year many pupils share the excitement of participating in one of the school musical productions. In the primary school, every pupil in P1 and P7 takes part in annual productions, accompanied by musicians from the secondary school.
In the secondary school, Hutchesons' has established an enviable reputation for its drama productions, which include the classics, modern drama, musicals and pupil-devised pieces. The school has an extensive theatrical wardrobe and pupils are involved in every aspect of running the drama department, including lighting and sound and all technical support, and manning front-of-house and backstage at productions.
The secondary school musical at the end of the summer term is of dazzlingly high quality. Productions have included West Side Story, Les Misérables and Jesus Christ Superstar, all ambitious projects for a school and performed to professional standards.
Art is very strong at Hutchesons' and the annual Art Shows at the primary and secondary schools reveal the breadth of talent and interest in art throughout the School. In the studios and workshops at Beaton Road, the art department aims to provide pupils with a broad range of skills which encourage an awareness and understanding of the visual world and its links to fine art, sculpture, design, and photography. Many pupils from Hutchesons' have graduated with art-related degrees in fine art, jewellery, textiles, journalism, printmaking, visual communication, town planning and architecture.
