It is important that pupils have ample opportunities in their courses each year from S1 to S6 to study locations throughout Scotland, the United Kingdom, Europe and further afield. All pupils get to know the City of Glasgow through regular visits. The department has also forged strong geographical links have been forged with a secondary school in Nitte, India.
In order to understand landscapes, pupils are encouraged to interpret them through detective work, employing an investigative approach that links field work evidence to processing and analysis in the classroom. Their work instils in pupils not only a knowledge and understanding of landscapes, people and environments near and far, but also a concern and appreciation that will remain with them in the years to come.
Pupils study 1 ½ hours of Geography in S1 and 1 hour in S2.
Although what is taught in S1 and S2 forms the basis of the in-depth academic study that comes later, the department also seeks to foster in our pupils key life skills and global awareness. During these two important years, pupils will come to grips with the following topics: settlement - case study of Glasgow; physical geography - case study of Scotland; weather and climate - case study of UK; farming, case studies of the UK; global earth movements - case studies within California; global population distribution - case studies of USA and Brazil; global development issues -case study of Nitte, India.
