History

The History Department aims to enrich pupils' understanding of and engagement with the present through a deepened understanding of the past.

The department has a long record of success based upon its use of up-to-date technology and variety in teaching methodologies to bring the past alive for all of our pupils, employing data projectors, interactive whiteboards, computer suites, the internet, mini-investigations, video and audio resources, re-enactments, group work, paired work and field work as well as more traditional forms of learning inside and outside the classroom and the school library.

Our courses from S1 to S6 set Scottish History within the wider context of European and World History while providing pupils with the analytical skills to make sense of the local and global narratives from which the modern world has emerged and that will be the basis of a life-long passion for the study of human history.

S1 and S2

Pupils study 1½  hours of History in S1 and 1 hour in S2.

The History department aims to build on the existing historical knowledge of S1 pupils as they explore fresh topics and tie the past to the present in order to make better sense of the world in which they live.  In the course of S1 and S2 pupils will investigate the issues relating to the question, "What is History?"; The Scottish Wars of Independence in 13th/14th centuries; European exploration of the world in the 14th to16th centuries; the world of the Aztecs;  The Atlantic Slave Trade; Scotland and reasons for the Union; and the Second World War - its causes, course and significance.
