Mathematics

The Mathematics Department aims to combine an appreciation of the power and beauty of Mathematics with the responsibility to prepare each pupil thoroughly for presentation in external examinations and to provide them with the mathematical understanding that will underpin their experience in other subject areas.

Pupils are encouraged to push themselves beyond the strict confines of the prescribed courses, employing a wide range of resources and methodologies to ensure a genuine understanding and appreciation of all aspects of the subject. Graphic calculators, computers and the internet are employed to build understanding through visualisation and exploration of mathematical concepts.

Pupils are entered for Mathematical competitions, regularly winning medals and awards at the highest levels.  Primary and Secondary pupils work together in exciting and fun problem-solving activities, such as the ‘Maths Pirates' day in which S6 and P6 enjoy Mathematics together.

S1 and S2

Pupils study Mathematics for 4 hours per week in S1 and S2.

For Mathematics there is a concern to maintain an intellectual focus on the art of Mathematics as well as securing and building upon the nuts and bolts of numeracy. In S1 and S2 the department covers some Euclidean geometry, algebraic manipulation, practical arithmetic and simple statistics.

The department marries an enthusiasm for Mathematics itself with the realisation that the skills that pupils learn in Maths classrooms supports much of their learning elsewhere in the school and so a key element in the S1 and S2 courses involves co-operation with other departments.
