Through an exploration of the ideas of the great philosophers, ancient and modern, pupils develop critical thinking skills to address such issues as what we mean by ‘right' and ‘wrong', whether there are any absolute truths, the nature of freedom, of certainty, the possibility of a ‘just war' and the purpose of punishment. Inevitably, debate and discussion form a major part of the teaching process in all of the courses we offer, with a particular emphasis on logical argument and critical evaluation.
The school organises a lively programme of conferences and special events, including an annual Philosophy Study Day, which attracts secondary pupils from across Scotland.
"My students have found these conferences to be a very valuable and informative experience. The large numbers attending these conferences also raises pupil awareness of the value of the subject across Scotland, and offers both pupils and teachers a good opportunity to share experiences"
