Situated in the Science block in five modern and lavishly appointed laboratories, the Physics Department has a proud record of examination success, producing half of the pupils gaining the top Higher result in Scotland over the last ten years. Pupils are given the knowledge, skills and understanding to explore key scientific questions as they move through the firm foundations of S1 and S2 courses through Standard grade, Higher and Advanced Higher courses.
Pupils study Physics for 1 hour per week in S1 and S2.
In S1 and S2 the department covers the theme of Physics and Society through which we aim to foster interest and understanding of the principles and concepts of physics upon which pupils will build in S3 and beyond. This ambition is striven for through our coverage of the following topic areas: Made to Measure (The systematic nature of measurement) Energy (Energy - the big issues!) Heat on the Move (Conduction, convection and radiation - and all associated applications) Electricity (Electricity for the future educated lay person and for the future S3 physics student).
