While developing pupils' knowledge and understanding of technology and their practical skills, the Technology Department at Hutchesons' aims to foster creativity and innovation through the design of working systems. This is achieved both through curricular and extra-curricular technology.
As well as enjoying success in examinations, the Car Maintenance course for S6, the lunchtime Technology Club and visits outside school, for example to the Scottish Gliding Centre, ensure that pupils' experience of Technology is a rich and rounded one.
Pupils participate and have won significant successes in the Arkwright Scholarship programme, young Engineers for Britain, the Young Electronic Designer Awards, the Rover Challenge and in the Scottish Space School. At the annual Celebration of Engineering for schools from across Scotland, Hutchesons' pupils display their work and take part in the Technology Challenge.
Pupils study I hour of Technology per week in S2.
Pupils are introduced to the role and impact of technology in society and we aim to equip them with appropriate skills in designing solutions and communicating ideas in ways familiar to those who work in technology and design.
Through an extended burglar alarm project pupils develop a range of skills in diverse areas: practical skills such as soldering, drilling and fitting components; design skills; computer design skills, graphic design; technological problem solving and decision making. From 2009 this course will be developed in combination with the Economics Department, exploring the economic and market implications of this kind of technological design and development.
