Drama

Hutchesons' has an outstanding extra-curricular programme for Drama, which allows pupils of all year groups to be involved in dramatic performance.

Oliver 19A key event in the Autumn calendar is the S1 and S2 production in conjunction with the Music Department. Involving a large number of pupils, this production is the ideal way for pupils new to the school to mix and feel involved in school life outside of the classroom. Recent productions include "An Evening with Gilbert and Sullivan", which included excerpts from Iolanthe, The Mikado and The Pirates of Penzance (three of Gilbert and Sullivan's 14 light operas), Bugsy Malone, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Oliver! and The Wiz.

The Drama Competition in February is open to all students in S3 who wish to take part. There are three categories: monologue, duologue and group presentations, and the pupils are directed by Drama staff and senior Drama pupils. Guest adjudicators have included author and playwright Liz Lochead; Carol Smillie; Peter Broad, Head of Drama at Eton College; and Kenny Fulton, a former pupil who has trained at the RSAMD in Glasgow and is now a professional actor.

June brings the Senior Show, co-produced with the Music Department and involving a large number of pupils from S4, S5 and S6. Recent successes include My Fair Lady, Kiss Me Kate, Les Miserables, Jesus Christ Superstar and We Will Rock You. The 2010 show was  West Side Story and the 2011 show will be Carousel.
