Learning a Musical Instrument

Music plays a significant part in the extra-curricular life of Hutchesons', in addition to its role in the curriculum. Pupils are encouraged to consider the possibility of learning to play a musical instrument. Tuition is available in the following instruments:

  • Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass
  • Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Saxophone, Bassoon
  • Trumpet ,Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, French horn
  • Guitar, Piano, Percussion, Bagpipes
  • Voice

Weekly lessons are provided by visiting specialist teachers on a rota basis from P4 to S3 and at fixed times in other years from P2. Pupils leave classes to attend these lessons and their parents are charged for the tuition in addition to school fees. Group lessons are also an option in the primary school on certain instruments and taster lessons being offered in P6. Full details of these packages and their current rates are available from the Music Administrator at the Secondary School.

The Head of Music at the Secondary School and the Music teachers at the Primary school are happy to advise on choice of instrument based on musical aptitude, eye/hand co-ordination and, where appropriate, embouchure.

When lessons commence, every pupil is given a practice diary. Parents are required to sign the weekly practice diary, and may use the space provided to communicate with the instrumental teachers.

Parents have the opportunity each year to consult visiting instrumental teachers directly about pupils' progress.

Pupils who choose to have singing and instrumental lessons at school are also supported by a number of services provided free of charge. Members of the Music Department provide classes in aural skills (Grades 6-8) as well as theory classes on request. The school can enter children for the practical and theoretical examinations for The Associated Board in the Autumn and Spring terms, as well as percussion practical examinations for Guildhall in the Autumn and Summer terms. Such examinations are usually taken at the school. Entry fees are paid by the school and invoiced directly to parents. We are also happy to provide accompanists and rehearsal time to ensure thorough preparation for practical examinations.
