Two S1 forms organised their very own Burns Supper for parents and fellow pupils. Colette Watt [S1] reports.
On Tuesday 25 January, Forms 1E and 1J held a charity Burns Supper. Parents and pupils were invited. The proceeds were donated to the school charity, Action for Children.
Shareen Ishaq was chairperson for the evening. She began by welcoming the assembled guests. Robbie Johnston was then invited to say the Selkirk Grace. Shareen invited us all to stand for the traditional piping in of the haggis.
Mr Dewar then took to the stage and delivered an authoritative Address to the Haggis, after which we all tucked in to traditional Burns fare of haggis, neeps and tatties, washed down by Irn Bru!
Following the meal, the entertainment began. Talented musicians Barnaby Woods, Nicky Ross and Anish Amin played two Scottish pieces as a trio. Barnaby played piano in the first piece and cello in the second. Ricky and Anish both played violin.
Gavin Lamb then delivered an interesting and informative Immortal Memory.
The audience was treated to two of Burns' best loved songs. Emily Watson sang 'Ae Fond Kiss' and Amani Zahoor sang 'Ye Banks and Braes o' Bonnie Doon'.
Adam Kerr then took to his feet to deliver a witty and humorous 'Toast to the Lassies'. Kharis Hutcheson followed suit, playing a lovely rendition of 'My love is like a red red rose' on her trumpet.
Colette Watt spoke on behalf on the women in the room giving a tongue-in-cheek 'Reply from the Lassies' to much laughter.
The night was rounded off with a raffle, with diverse prizes indeed, ranging from homemade tablet to a turnip!
The night was very successful and enjoyable. We would like to thank all those who were involved in the evening especially our audience.
We are delighted to say that we raised over £180 for Action for Children.
