More than 60 pupils in Primaries 6 and 7 at Glasgow area primary schools attended a Primary Mathematics Masterclass at Hutchesons on Monday 28 March. Organised by Pauline Smith, a Maths teacher at Hutchesons', the masterclass was designed to raise awareness and interest in the Royal Institution masterclasses that run throughout the UK.
The pupils, from Glasgow, Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire and South Lanarkshire, had fun paperfolding 2D and 3D shapes with Liz Meenan, from the University of Leeds and learning about topological surfaces and the mobius strip with Julia Collins, from the University of Edinburgh. Pauline Smith, Mary Teresa Fyfe, Sharon Frisher and Dr Lionel Richard from the Hutchesons' Maths department, organised team relays and computer maths puzzles.
The children were "very enthusiastic when they came back to school," said one headteacher. "They even taught some of the activities to their own class! We really appreciate your hospitality and the opportunity to widen the pupils' mathematical experiences."
