During the week of from 23 to 26 May, pupils in S3 went 'off timetable'. Three groups headed abroad and around 80 pupils and numerous staff participated in 11 different activities in and around Glasgow. The activities ranged from 'discovering Glasgow' to discussing business; from watersports to photography to community action.
S3 Year Tutor Ian Harrow reports on a busy few days.
Despite the cancellation of a windsurfing/canoeing session due to unseasonally inclement weather, the pupils rose to the various challenges, including the creation of a mural at Action for Children's Stoneside Family Support centre.
The week drew to a close with 'Entertainment for Erskine'. The Music and Drama departments produced a concert for local residents and guests from Erskine Hospital, with contributions from the Wind Band, Intermediate Orchestra and Choir, songs from the shows and the Pipe Band. Pupils served tea and cakes to the visitors and spoke with them; a meeting of the generations.
Keen S3 historians and their teachers enjoyed an excellent tour of Germany, visiting Munich, Dachau, Nuremberg and Berchtesgaden and learning first-hand about the consequences of Hitler's dream of a 1,000-year Reich.
Modern linguists studying Spanish set off for Barcelona. Caitlin Judd [S3]: After dinner on day 1 we got our first feel of the metro and went to the Montjuïc fountain display. On Monday morning we woke early and headed to La Boquería market to find all kinds of food for sale - from fruit smoothies to sheep's heads. We then went to the famous Sagrada Família where we had a tour of the beautiful cathedral. The day was officially declared Gaudí day as we spent the afternoon walking through the city looking for any other of his unique buildings. We walked through Park Güell to eventually find an amazing view of the city. On Tuesday morning we got the metro and then a funicular to the 1992 Olympic stadium and then onto the Fundació Joan Miró, where many of his famous works are displayed. Later, the boys were happy to find out that our next stop was the Nou Camp - home of FC Barcelona. We also headed to the famous Ramblas and there was more shopping that evening as we went on a trip to the Maremagnum Centre at the waterfront which pleased the girls!
