Kingarth Street felt like small and busy African village last Wednesday, when pupils and staff celebrated the world depicted in the children's book "Handa's Surprise", by Eileen Browne.
In a day that incorporated language teaching and fundraising, each year group was given a fundraising task and pupils spent lunchtime enjoying activities and stalls with an African or fruit theme. To add to the fun and authenticity of the day, pupils were invited to dress up for a donation of £1 as an animal or something in keeping with the African theme.
Modern Languages teacher Irene Davis saw the book as ideal to incorporate into Superbär's language project in which the principal aim is to raise pupils' awareness of other languages and cultures and to persuade them that everyone is able to learn another language.
Pupils explored life and culture in small village communities in Kenya and in Africa as a whole and the Modern Languages, PE and Music departments were also involved in the project.
The preparatory language work culminated in a celebratory assembly on at which each year group performed from the book in a different language.
