Hutchesons' takes Action for Children

Charity Cheque Presentation 2011 006Pupils at Hutchesons' have presented a cheque for £24,500 to Action for Children at special assemblies at the primary and secondary schools. The money was raised by pupils and staff during the 2010-2011 session.

Carol McKinlay, Scotland West Fundraiser for Action for Children,  parent of Tony, who attends Action for Children's Stoneside Family Support Project, expressed their gratitude for the cheque, which will go towards strengthening their work with disadvantaged children in the local area.

Hutchesons' was delighted to work with Action for Children, says Depute Rector Jim McDougall. "In looking for this session's charity we consulted widely within our school community. We wanted to work with a charity that has an impact in Scotland, and Glasgow in particular. It was important that the charity addressed the needs of young people and their families and, equally vital, we wanted to build a relationship that would last beyond the initial fund raising phase."

Action for Children footballPupils and staff at Hutchie have enjoyed a close working relationship with key members of AfC's staff, who immediately took on board the idea of a long-term partnership. Pupils and staff have rolled up their sleeves to help at corporate functions, Christmas and Easter parties, as well as a raft of fundraising activities. A group of S3 pupils spent their activity week creating a mural at Stoneside Family Centre. In April, members of the Hutchesons' football team joined up with young people from the Youthbuild project in an inaugural charity cup match at the School's Auldhouse playing fields.

Mural at StonesideContinuing the theme of partnership, members of AfC staff joined in many fundraising events, such as a Talent Show, a Burns Night and the annual cross country run. The Hutchie' connection with AfC will continue, with pupils being given the opportunity to get involved in volunteering at local centres such as Stoneside, or learning first-hand about fund raising and event management for work experience.

Jim McDougall: "We have thoroughly enjoyed working with the AfC team this session; we have had a lot of fun, but most importantly we have raised a lot of money and encouraged our pupils to get engaged in the practical side of charitable work."
