Primary Two keep an eye on their vision

Over the past few weeks pupils in P2 have enjoyed parent visits explaining the importance of sight and how vision works.

Optician Visit 2

On Monday 3 October Mrs MacQuien, a P2 parent - pictured above, came to talk to the children about her job as an optician.

Pupils were shown images from inside the eye and Mrs MacQuien was impressed that they knew that the eye is attached to the brain and that the optic nerve sends messages from the eye to the brain.

Optician Visit 2Mrs MacQuien showed what a squint was and talked about ways they can be rectified. The children were able to answer her questions about people who are long sighted and those who are short sighted. Pupils also heard about the importance of keeping eyes clean and saw some pictures illustrating blepharitus, a condition where skin grows on the eyelashes.

The children shared their knowledge of what to eat to keep their eyes healthy; bananas, green vegetables and most importantly, berries. Pupils tried on glasses, left, and got a chance to see professional optical instruments.

Dr Simmers visit

On Tuesday 27 September another P2 parent, Dr Simmers - pictured above, also came to the school to talk about how our eyes function.

Dr Simmers talked about how the eye uses the optic nerve to send messages to the brain. The pupils were shown some optical illusions, illustrating how the brain plays tricks on the eyes!  Dr Simmers allowed the children to use special 3D glasses and also let them try glasses that simulate when a person has cataracts. The children loved the whole experience.   Dr Simmers Visit 2

Both visits were well received and thanks must be given to Doctor Simmers and Mrs MacQuien who also kindly left some glasses for the P2 Optician Surgery.
