Kingarth Street was delighted to have a house call from the Doctor recently.
Dr Macaulay, the mother of Grace (P2) and Michael (P3) came to talk to the Primary 2 classes about their bodies and how to keep healthy.
The year group have been working on ‘Our Senses’ as a topic and have just started to study the main organs and joints in the body. Dr Macaulay started by talking about the heart and what it is used for. The children knew that it pumped blood around their bodies, that we use our lungs to breathe and that cigarettes clog the lungs making breathing more difficult.
Pupils felt the difference in their pulse rates when sitting and after running on the spot for a minute and were astonished at how fast it became after exercise!
Dr Macaulay then asked the children to name some healthy foods. Several fruits and green vegetables were mentioned and there was a discussion about where the food goes once swallowed. Dr Macaulay mixed up some porridge and put it in a clear bag, she shook it up to illustrate that food looks like a smoothie by the time it reaches the stomach.
The children impressed Dr Macaulay with their knowledge that food passes through the intestines and comes out through the bladder and bowel and promised to keep their bodies healthy by doing exercise and eating good food.
Primary 2 greatly enjoyed the visit and thanks must go to Dr Macaulay for helping them understand what goes on inside their bodies.
