Big Writing makes a big impact at Hutchesons'

Big Writing Super Heroes

Hutchesons’ Grammar School has been working with the Big Writing framework both within assessment, as explained in our recent parent workshop, and by teaching four key points to improve writing - vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation.

Pupils from P3H studied Big Writing in P2 and were happy to show Primary 1-7 how it works. They hosted a special assembly earlier this month using the Big Writing super heroes shown above.

  •  Victoria Visualiser helps the children to use WOW words in their stories. The children in the photo below have a 'boring' sentence so Victoria Visualiser adds a WOW word to make the sentence more interesting.
  •  Captain Connective introduces connectives such as and, because, so and but to help sentences flow.
  •  The Incredible Opener says 'don't start every sentence with the, I or my'. A pupil transformed ‘The cat walked into the room’ into ‘Stealthily the cat walked into the room'
  •  Doctor Punctuation heals sentences and introduces different types of punctuation.

Teacher Mrs Heywood has been impressed by the level of advancement under the system saying: “The children really love Big Writing and it is having a huge impact on their learning.”
