P3 show bags of commitment for Mary’s Meals

Primary 3 Mary's Meals

Pupils of Primary 3 were so touched by the presentation from Tony Begly, Education Co-ordinator for our new school charity Mary’s Meals earlier this term that they decided to start collecting 1 and 2 pence coins for the appeal, with some children bringing in their change the day after.

The first collection counted up to £1.28, this sounds like a small amount but as pupils have learned, with Mary’s Meals even a few pennies can make a big difference.

The keen class then worked out how many children could be fed with that amount of money. After plenty of discussion, including some sums on bits of paper and grouping the coins in 4’s the group were delighted and shocked to discover that such a small amount would feed 32 children! This discovery had the added bonus of becoming a great maths lesson too!

They were so inspired that they then started to put their coins in large empty coca cola bottle and they have almost filled it in less than four weeks! An enterprising pupil suggested that once it is full there should be a competition to guess the amount in the bottle and raise even more money.

Another boy commented on how he felt about the collection saying: “It makes me feel so happy to know that we are filling children’s empty hungry tummies”

The children have also started to fill rucksacks and bags for Mary’s Meals Backpack Project that provides a life changing gift to children who have suffered due to war, poverty, famine, or natural disasters and cannot afford the basics like pencils and copy books, or even suitable clothes for school.

So far they have filled an amazing 31 bags and are keen to do more. If you would like to find out what goes into a backpack more information is available on the Mary’s Meals website and teacher Mrs Heywood and P3H would be happy to welcome your backpack to their collection.
