Hutchesons’ Grammar School will be named as the Scottish Independent School of the Year 2011/12 in the forthcoming Sunday Times Schools Guide this weekend.
The award recognises outstanding academic achievement alongside a variety of other factors and reflects Hutchesons' strong record in exam results, accessibility, charity and community work.
Alastair McCall, editor of The Sunday Times Schools Guide and Parent Power commented:
The clear winner of this year's Sunday Times Scottish Independent Secondary School of the Year award, Hutchesons' combines academic excellence with a nurturing culture that breeds global citizens of tomorrow.
Philanthropy is never far from the surface, both in terms of what the children strive to achieve and in the school's own efforts to bring the education it offers to the widest possible audience. That children achieve so highly, so consistently is remarkable - a tribute to the children themselves, the Rector and his dedicated staff. This is not an excellent education provided to a lucky few.
Hutchesons' frequently has the largest cohort of students taking Highers of any independent school in Scotland, making their outstanding results all the more laudable.
Hutchesons’ Rector Dr Ken Greig welcomed this recognition for the school:
I’m delighted to accept this award on behalf of the whole Hutchie community, especially as it recognises what I know are our key strengths – a really powerful learning culture with the expectation of academic excellence, and a remarkably diverse curriculum both in and out of the classroom. The vision of having this education accessible to children from any background falls squarely on the shoulders of the Hutcheson brothers from 1641, and it is a tradition we are proud to uphold.
This news follows a year of success for the school, with 16 pupils (pictured above) achieving six Highers at A grade and the receipt of the prestigious Stephenson Award for Lifelong Learning in recognition of Hutchesons’ work with Action for Children.
