Modern Languages Carnival Assembly

Here Mrs Davis, who co-ordinates Modern Languages at Kingarth Street, shares how the Modern Languages Assembly on 8 February brought an international carnival feel to the Primary School.

Modern Languages Carnival Assembly 4
Superbär, our resident Modern Languages teacher at Kingarth Street, invited senior French assistant Annelise Jouannin , German assistant Carolin Reuster and an Italian visitor, Claudia Panizza from the Trentino area of Italy, to explain this week's word of the week "carnival"  to our pupils at our Modern Languages Assembly.

Modern Languages Carnival Assembly 3After hearing about the masks of the Venetian carnival, pupils imagined being in Cologne and Düsseldorf and chanting "Kölle Alaaf!" and "Hellau" to the passing procession of floats.  Pupils were surprised to be rewarded by a traditional shower of sweets.  The next surprise in store was to see Carolin and her friends cutting in half the ties which our male members of staff were wearing.

Annelise tried tossing a pancake in one hand whilst holding a coin in the other, a tradition known as la Chandeleur in France, in the hope of being prosperous for the forthcoming year.  The pièce de résistance  was Annelise  posing as the Mayor of Dunkirk traditionally tossing fresh herring into the assembled crowds.  "Ça pue!"

In the absence of our Spanish friends we watched an amusing video clip of a satirical singing competition in Cadiz.

Rea, the carnival bear, jetted in from Rio di Janeiro for the assembly and is the prize for Superbär's Carnival quiz, for which all proceeds will go to Mary's Meals.
