The Pod Pupils

Did you know that Mary, Queen of Scots, suffered her final defeat in Langside 440 years ago? Second-year Hutchesons' pupils hope that a podcast they have just made will encourage residents and visitors to learn more about their local area and to walk the Langside Heritage Trail, which was launched last year in printed form.

After walking the 6.4 km length of the Langside Heritage Trail, which Kelsey Miller described as ‘really interesting', the 20 pupils and English teacher Cate Hamilton, planned, scripted and recorded a podcast to accompany the trail. ‘We made the podcast because it is easier to listen to the information than to read it,' continued Kelsey. Rebecca McDonald, agreed: ‘You don't need to be continually looking at a map,' she said.

‘The podcast was an opportunity for cross-curricular learning that couldn't be missed', said Mrs Hamilton. ‘I think the pupils have used skills from History, Geography, English and ICT, as well as Media Studies, which will help them in their future studies. The class worked collaboratively at each stage of the process. I was very impressed with the pupils' ability to see the project through to the end.'

Conor Benson thought it was a clever way to show the history of Langside. ‘It showed me a side of Langside I never knew existed', he said.

‘Making the podcast gave us the opportunity to use digital recording equipment and to learn about Langside at the same time', said Robyn Catherwood.

The pupils organised a launch party for the podcast on 18 June, to which they invited members of the local community, including Dr Evelyn Silber (above centre), chair of the Langside Battlefield and Camphill Community Council and one of the authors of the Langside Heritage Trail booklet.
