Hutchesons' Pupils Enjoy German Language and Music Exchange
Hutchesons' has enjoyed a warm relationship with the Hans-Sachs-Gymnasium in Nuremberg, Germany, for many years, during which time pupils have spent time in each others' countries, absorbing a new language. The Music Department has been involved, too, and earlier this year, the Hutchesons’ Chamber Choir performed in Germany.
This Autumn it was the turn of the German singers to visit Hutchesons'. Harald Fischer, Depute Rector of the Hans-Sachs-Gymnasium, reports.
Following Hutchesons' visit to Germany, 25 musicians and singers from the German partner school, Hans-Sachs-Gymnasium in Nuremberg, came to Glasgow in September, accompanied by music teachers Mr Georg Schlee and Mr Armin Bahr, German teacher Mrs Margit Wittkowski and long-time exchange organiser, English teacher Mrs Renate Ehrlinger. They were very warmly welcomed by Dr Greig, Mr MacAllister, Mr Trotter and Mrs Davis, and the rest of the staff, and the host families did everything they could to make them feel comfortable.
Apart from the tourist programme, this stay was, of course, hard musical work. Mr Schlee played the organ at Assembly, and on their last day the choir had the opportunity to sing several songs during the Primary assembly (left). Above all, the pupils used two entire days to prepare for the concert on 2 October, in the Auditorium in the Fotheringay Centre, for which Hans-Sachs Depute Rector, Mr Harald Fischer, joined the group. Depute Rector Mr Graham MacAllister opened the evening with a few charming and heartfelt words about Nuremberg. In the first part, several German and foreign songs, mainly from the early 20th century, were performed, followed by the songs from the Hans-Sachs 2007 production of “Little Shop of Horrors” in the second part, all to critical acclaim from a highly satisfied audience.
