And the pupils certainly did rock the capacity audiences during their five-night run. The Hutchesons’ production, which is only the second in Scotland, involved well over 100 pupils, on stage, in the band or behind the scenes.
Among the stars were pupils Chris Hansell (above right) and David Rutherford who shared the role of Galileo over the course of the five nights, while Simone Golumb (above, second right) and Sophie Clark both played the role of Scaramouche.
Rachel Fitzpatrick and Joelle Gerber shared the role of the mean Killer Queen (left), and Fiona MacKenzie and Emily Stevenson (above left) both played the role of Meatloaf. Jimmy Mitchell played the hilariously sycophantic character of Khashoggi.
Based on the songs of Queen and named after their hit single of the same name, We Will Rock You was written by comedian and author Ben Elton in collaboration with Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor. The musical is a spoof of the classic quest tale, based in a tongue-in-cheek dystopian future where originality and individuality are shunned.
We Will Rock You opened in London in 2002 and is still running.
Drama has a strong role at Hutchesons’, both as part of the curriculum and as an extra-curricular activity. Last year’s major productions included Jesus Christ Superstar and Bugsy Malone, and senior pupils created their own productions of Abigail’s Party and The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.
