Young Enterprise Business Wins 1st Prize

Hutchesons' Business Wins Young Enterprise  Prize for Second Year in a Row

Young Enterprise Business Wins 1st PrizeTrading under the name ‘Acid Cherry’, a group of S6 pupils from Hutchesons’ Grammar School won the Young Enterprise Prize at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on 15 December, out of dozens of business teams fielded from 35 different schools. At the annual craft fair, the fledgling companies were judged on layout, corporate identity (including colour scheme, lettering and selling message) and overall image.

Young Enterprise Business Wins 1st PrizeTwo other Hutchesons’ companies, ‘Synergy’ and ‘ugreen’, came fourth and fifth respectively. All five Hutchesons’ companies gained commendation at the event.

Headed by S6 pupil Stuart Williams as MD, Acid Cherry was assisted by teaching staff, including William Ferguson, who is responsible for Young Enterprise at Hutchesons’. The pupils sold hand-made Christmas cards, alongside candles decorated with cast-off buttons.

Every year, many S6 Hutchesons’ pupils enthusiastically take part in Young Enterprise Scotland activities, and have the opportunity to work in various posts as they set up and run a small business in a safe environment. In 2007 five businesses are trading from Hutchesons’. They sell their products to the general public at YES Trade Fairs and eventually wind up their company with a formal shareholders’ meeting.

Lauren Williamson, a member of 'Ugreen', reports:

Young enterprise companies, ‘Ugreen’, ‘Midas’, ‘Project Paradise’, ‘Acid Cherry’ and ‘Synergy’ set off early on Saturday for a day of selling products at Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall. Companies came from all over Scotland, from Edinburgh to Eaglesham, for the annual YE Trade Fair competition. But it was Hutchie that stole the show again this year.

Although only one team could win, the general mood among the Hutchie companies was a happy one. One member of the team “Synergy” described his day:

It was a great success for us. We had an honorary mention for having a good product design and made a fortune. We didn’t expect to do so well but I think it was thanks to our innovative Duct tape Wallets!”
