A Primary 7 pupil from Hutchesons’ won the prestigious Hugh S Roberton Memorial Trophy for the best performer under the age of 14 at the recent Glasgow Music Festival. Hebba Benyaghla, age 11, from Newton Mearns, plays regularly at Kingarth Street, both as a soloist and also accompanying instrumental ensembles.
Many Hutchie pupils enthusiastically took part in the Glasgow Music Festival this year, and several pupils won prizes. Another Primary 7 pupil, Mashal Aamir, won 1st prize in solo verse and also in Sight Reading, and 3rd in ‘Write Your Own Poem’. Alexander Lawrence [P6] was 1st in Violin Solo and Lucas Schmulian [P6] 1st in Piano Solo. Kevin Carr was 2nd in Television News Reading and Jamie Lee [P5] was 2nd in Scots Fiddle and 3rd equal in Violin Solo.
Secondary pupils also performed well. Crawford McInally-Kier and Charlotte McKechnie [S3] won 1st prize in Intermediate Vocal Duets and Crawford was 2nd in Television News Reading. Louise Mealyea [S5] was 1st in Scottish Verse (16 & over). Gordon Biggart [S3] was 2nd in Cello Solo, and Sehyr Zahoor [S4] was 2nd in Solo Verse and also in Prepared Reading.
Hutchesons' Grammar School Flute Ensemble came 2nd in Woodwind Ensembles.
The Glasgow Music Festival began in 1911 and attracts around 7,000 young pupils from the UK and abroad.
