Pupil Passes Advanced Driving Test

A Hutchesons’ pupil has passed his Advanced Driving Test, just a few months after passing the ordinary test.

Calum Strang, 18, from Bothwell, is one of the youngest drivers in Scotland to pass the difficult test. Depute Rector Jim McDougall is delighted with Calum’s progress in such a short time. “This is a very challenging test for all drivers”, he said, “and Calum is a real role model for other teenage drivers.”

The Institute of Advanced Motoring introduced the Advanced Driving Test to improve standards of driving using principles pioneered – and applied with great success – by the Metropolitan Police. "It's quite gruelling," says Calum. "I had to drive for 1 1/2 hours with my advanced driving instructor and demonstrate the advanced techniques I had learned." The driver has to keep a running commentary for the whole duration.

Calum says he is now able to control the car with precision, to drive with a high degree of concentration and awareness and to anticipate danger and mistakes from other road users.

Calum’s mother, Mary Strang, says she is proud that he chose to spend some of his sixth year working so hard towards his advanced driving test while pursuing Advanced Highers. He plans to start a degree course in Mechanical with Automative Engineering at Strathclyde University in the Autumn.
