If you had the opportunity to tell world leaders what they should do to solve global problems such as infectious diseases, climate change, poverty and the global economy, what would you say? Four Hutchesons’ teenagers decided to make their voices heard.
The four 14-year-olds, all in S3 - Scott MacOwan, Ellie Barnes, Saorcha Warren and Kirsten McIntosh worked together to come up with their own ideas on how to tackle the key issues being discussed by the G8 and they submitted these ideas online through the ‘Junior 8’ website.
The Hutchesons’ team made it to the final short-list of seven teams which travelled to London during the Easter break and spent a day being intensively grilled on their ideas by experts from UNICEF. They did not win but did remarkably well, considering they were competing against teams which were at least two years older. They were also the only Scottish team in the final.
The winning travels to the G8 summit in Hokkaido, Japan in July and has the opportunity to put its ideas to one or more of the G8 leaders. The Junior 8 programme gives you the chance to develop your own ideas about the most pressing global issues today, says Geography teacher Akiko Tomitaka, who accompanied the pupils to London, ‘and to discuss them with your friends, classmates and young people from around the world.’
