Toilet Trouble Team

Four S6 pupils from Hutchesons’ won the PRI British Science Final at Sheffield Hallam University on 11 September, out of a field of 35 finalists. Nadia Hyder, Zenub Qulsoom, Bhajneek Grewal and Angel Lin (above: left to right) presented their project, “Toilet Troubles”, which highlights the need for washing hands after using the toilet, to an audience of peers and scientists.

Their success comes after already winning the Scottish CREST Finals earlier this year, and the PRI Scottish Finals in June,

The team of S6 pupils was also invited to present their project at the Royal Society’s first-ever Science Exhibition at the Glasgow Science Centre in September, the only School in Scotland to have such an honour. Visitors were able to find out about some of the latest developments in scientific research and also to meet and talk to the researchers behind the work on show. Several other pupils volunteered to help over the three days of the Exhibition, which saw many pupils and distinguished visitors.

The four pupils will go to London to represent Scotland in the CREST (Creativity in Science and Education) Fair on 23 February 2007, which will be held at the Royal Society. The fair is considered the “Oscars” of the science world for 11-19 year olds. They will also take part in the PRI "Express Yourself" National Conference at the Royal Institution, London.

The "Express Yourself" Conferences are part of the Pupil Researcher Initiative (PRI), a national curriculum project that aims to raise pupils' motivation and achievement in science through doing “real science”.
