The Hutchesons' team won the Enterprising Maths National Final at Jordanhill on 20 November. S3 pupils Sarah Burns and Ruaridh Moffat-Coutts and S4 pupils Sandy Nimmo and Tim Heelis (left, with Head of Maths Mary Teresa Fyfe) fought off competition from all over Scotland.
This year saw more than 50 schools taking part in five rounds of competition, which culminated in a maths relay race. Hutchesons' won the day, beating Balerno Community High School into second and Glasgow Academy into third place .
The event is sponsored by the Actuarial Profession and is aimed at 13-15 year olds to encourage an interest in mathematics and its application in the world beyond the classroom.
Mary Teresa Fyfe, Head of Maths at Hutcheson's, said: "The event helps pupils see the value of maths beyond the curriculum. Not only is maths intellectually challenging but it is used in all aspects of our everyday life, from bridge building to banking. The aim of the event is that pupils and their teachers leave the competition with a renewed interest in the subject and the opportunities that studying maths can offer."
Schools competed in a number of regional competitions before making the journey to Glasgow for the final event.
