Primary 1: Healthy and Happy Children

Keeping Safe

A community road safety officer visited Primary one to talk to them about keeping safe on the road. She reminded them never to cross a road if they see an emergency vehicle coming and talked about the importance of walking on the pavement and holding hands with an adult to cross the road. 'Stop, Look, Listen and Think' is the mantra all pupils learned.

Fireman hoseThe children were bowled over when the Polmadie firefighters swept into the Kingarth Street playground, sirens blazing. Pupils spent time with a fire fighter who showed us his uniform and let us try on his helmet. They saw the different apparatus inside the engine and were allowed to climb in to the front of the fire engine and imagine what it would be like to be a real fire fighter. The best bit of all was using the hoses to squirt water all over the playground!

Keeping Healthy

A local GP and a Hutchie parent talked to P1 pupils talked about what is on the inside and outside of their bodies. The children knew that on the outside they had skin and hair. They were not even close to guessing correctly the number of hairs they have on their bodies. The actual number is 5 million; more than on a gorilla! The children were also visited by a dental hygienist who told them how to look after their teeth.

According to Primary 1 teacher Mrs Ross, 'We have been trying to be very healthy, eating fruit and vegetables and doing lots of exercise. We made vegetable soup using turnip, carrots, potatoes and a vegetable stock cube. We thought it tasted delicious and ate it all up!' The pupils also made fruit smoothies using fresh raspberries, squeezed oranges and natural yoghurt as a healthy snack for play-time.

HalloweenKeeping Happy

Primary 1 pupils celebrated Halloween at Hutchie with a musical morning. They recited poems, sang songs and wore spooky masks they had made earlier. Some of the teachers looked very scary indeed! They also enjoyed dooking for apples. Some used their mouths while others dropped in a fork. 'We are learning about healthy foods,' says Mrs Ross, 'so we all enjoyed munching our apples, except those in Primary one with wobbly front teeth!'
