Hutchie FP is 'Best Young Dentist in the UK'

Dr Mike Gow - Young Dentist of the Year

Michael Alan Gow (C1994) (known as Michael Simpson when at Hutchesons')  was awarded the title of ‘Best Young Dentist in Scotland' and subsequently ‘Best Young Dentist in the UK', out of the nine UK regional winners at the prestigious 2008 Dentistry Awards in December.

Mike graduated in dentistry from the University of Glasgow in 1999 and much of his work is in helping people overcome their fears and phobias of dentistry, allowing them to have their dental treatment. He uses many techniques including conscious sedation and hypnosis.

He gained a Masters in Hypnosis Applied to Dentistry from University College London, in 2004 and he is now currently studying for a Masters in Dental Anxiety Management at University of Edinburgh. Mike is currently the President of the British Society of Medical and Dental Hypnosis (Scotland).

Mike recently won the bid to host the next European Society of Hypnosis Congress in Glasgow in 2011. This will attract over 750 medics, dentists and psychologists from across Europe to Scotland for the Congress.

In March 2008 Mike demonstrated the use of hypnosis in pain control on a BBC2 documentary called ‘Alternative Therapies'. The documentary showed a woman having two teeth extracted and two implants placed using hypnosis instead of conventional anaesthetics for pain control.

Mike Gow works in the Berkeley Clinic, Glasgow.
