Animal Magic

P1 ZoolabZoolab visited the Primary 1 classes to talk about lifecycles. Eileen showed the children tiny eggs and they had to guess what animal had hatched out. A snail was the correct answer. "We then met Oscar the snail," says P1 teacher Caroline Ross, "and lots of us held him in our hands.

"We found out was that snails have more teeth than most other animals. They have hundreds of little teeth on their tongue!"

The pupils met Larry, the hissing cockroach. He loves eating cabbage and used to live in the rain forest. Eileen also showed them baby cockroaches called nymphs. They were introduced to Toby the toad, who had great big, bulging eyes and loves to eat crickets for dinner. When he blinks his eyes, the food is pushed down into his stomach.

P1 ZoolabJake the snake came next. He is a corn snake and loves eating mice and rats. He only eats once a week. The children had to be careful not to squeeze him as he has lots of little bones. He starts off life in an egg and sheds his skin.
