Guests went back in time at the annual Hutchesons' Dinner on 6 March, as they watched film footage shot at Crown Street and the new Beaton Road in the late 1950s. In the candle-lit surroundings of the Fotheringay Centre, guests young and older watched the flickering images, which included gymnastics under the watchful stained-glass eyes of George and Thomas Hutcheson, and the bright new surroundings at Beaton Road. With the sound turned down and piano music provided by Edgar Trotter, you almost expected the Rector of the day, the aptly named Mr Hutcheson, to leap up from his desk to save a damsel tied to the railway tracks!
It was a terrific evening. As the historic images played and as dinner was served, guests enjoyed three different wines courtesy of the Gladstone Winery in New Zealand, owned by Christine Kernohan, née Nicol (C1967), and marveled at the glorious voices of fifth-year pupils Charlotte McKechnie and Crawford McInally-Kier.
Douglas Jessiman (C1980), a partner in the law firm Brechin Tindal Oatts, made his own historical contribution to the evening with a wickedly satirical history of the Jessiman family at Hutchesons' from the fictitious Sir Hugo in 1690 to the equally imaginary Penelope and Nigel Jessiman in the 19th century.
The real business of the evening, of course, was the presentation of the George and Thomas Hutcheson Awards, whose 2009 receipients were announced following the Former Pupil Council AGM chaired by Helen Wright (C1971). The awards were announced by head girl Rachel Malcolm and head boy Josh Fields.
Male - Frank Blin (C1972)
