During the Easter break, Classics staff and S2 pupils visited Rome to sample the culture, history and food of the Eternal City."For the first three days we focused on ancient remains" says Head of Classics, Duncan Gillies, "the spectacular Baths of Caracalla, the Colosseum, the beautifully preserved port of Rome,Ostia, and the catacombs - over 50 miles of underground tunnels which served as the burial place for hundreds of thousands of Christians and Jews during the Early Christian Period.
"Our focus then shifted to more recent monuments: we paid homage to the tombs of the Scottish Kings in St Peters and climbed the spectacular dome of the Basilica. The Pantheon, the Spanish steps and plenty of shopping completed our final days. Our return visit was guaranteed - or so some believe - by throwing coins over shoulders into the Trevi fountain."
Pupils had a chance to see some of the most enduring monuments of Western Civilization, learn a bit of history, a spot of Italian and an opportunity develop that most important skill for the seasoned traveller - how to haggle!
