Manjit Jheeta, Head of Biology, and Dee McCarthy, also a Biology teacher visited our Global Partnership School, The Dr. NSAM English Medium School in Nitte, near Mangalore, India from 1-9 April 2009. Now in its third year, the partnership is sponsored by the British Council.
Mrs Jheeta reports:
After a 26-hour journey, we were welcomed at Mangalore Airport in the traditional way with sprinkle of rose water and garlands of jasmine flowers. During our stay, we observed different classes, attended staff meetings and CPD sessions, and discussed various projects of mutual interest. Irene Davis's Primary 6 class had sent letters and posters to Nitte and we brought back with us work of Primary 6 class in Nitte. These will be displayed at Kingarth Street. Equally we exchanged Biology projects on Health and diseases, food webs and biodiversity. Information from India will be used for discussing Global issues in Biology classes.
The school is funded by Nitte Educational Trust, which also funds several other educational institutions, including medical and dental colleges, a hospital, engineering college, MBA institute and a college of hotel management. Chaired by Mr Hegde, the Trust is happy to entertain any Hutchesonian who wishes to visit Nitte in future!
We met local craftsmen, basket weavers and potters who have kept the trade in their families for many generations. They live simple lives and seem to be at peace with what little they have as long as they can use their mobile phones!
We were swept off our feet by the hospitality of local people, the diversity, the colours, the heat, the noise, the chaos and friendliness of the country. On the last day of our visit we were entertained by the school children and were made to join in the Indian dancing, which was very entertaining for them!
Next step: Pupils from Hutchesons' will be visiting Nitte in September 2009 and I feel sure they will have as memorable a time as we did.
