Anniversary of The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Hungry Caterpillar Day AssemblyThe hall at Kingarth Street was a mass of antennae when the Hutchesons' celebration of the 40th anniversary of Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar came to a rousing conclusion on 3 June with a celebratory assembly and lunchtime fair.

Different languages on stageThe focus of the day was a presentation of The Very Hungry Caterpillar in several different languages, part of the primary school's curriculum which aims to raise awareness of other languages and cultures and to persuade all pupils that they can learn another language. Year groups read the classic tale in German, French, Spanish, Italian and Latin, with individual children reading sections in languages as diverse as Swedish, Hebrew, Norwegian, Hungarian and Punjabi.

Tables of cakesThe fun continued with a whole-school cake-making competition after which the mostly chocolate caterpillars and butterflies were devoured at 20p a slice! All funds went to the Full Circle Foundation, which is dedicated to supporting teenagers with cerebral palsy.

Secondary pupils from the Modern Languages, Music and Art departments also took part.
