Paris in May for Urban Geography

Cycling through ParisA group of S3 Urban Geography pupils ventured to Paris for four days at the end of May in order to gain field experience of urban settlement and related problems such as traffic congestion.

The trip began with a aerial view of Paris from the top of the Eiffel tower. As the weather was perfect for the whole weekend the pupils had a magnificent view across the city right out into the suburbs. On the second day the group cycled around the 1er and 6ème arrondisements with an extremely knowledgeable guide who recounted fascinating stories about famous landmarks. Lunch in the Tuileries was followed by a short shopping trip to Galeries Lafayette and then it was back to the hotel for dinner and a game of football.

In the Cheese FactoryThe key focus of the trip was the effect of a large business on a rural area. The third day was therefore spent in and around Marne La Vallée where pupils examined the growth of the new town around Disneyland in the morning and then visited one of the few remaining Brie de Meaux artisans in the countryside. After gorging on three delicious types of cheese, pupils were treated to a traditional French meal in the hotel in the evening where they ate frogs' legs!

Disneyland

The highlight of the trip was an adventure in Disneyland on the penultimate day. Glorious sunshine and plenty of excitement on the rides made this a day to remember for everyone.

Finally, the trip was rounded off with an exclusive visit to the British Ambassador's residence in the centre of Paris. Pupils were treated to a historical tour of the building and then to coffee and cakes in the conservatory. It was the perfect end to a wonderful weekend in the the City of Lights. We can't wait to go back!
