Gifted Pupils Go for Gold

Pupils brought back a haul of medals from the Scottish Schools Track & Field Championships at Grangemouth Stadium on 12/13 June, at an event which saw the 44-year-old Triple Jump record held by Hutchesons' FP Hamish Robertson (C1965) smashed by an Edinburgh schoolboy.

Triple Jump is still particularly strong at Hutchesons', however. In addition to Matthew Kerr's U17 Gold, Taylor Spiers came 8th in the same competition, Blair McCarte and Tony Buchanan were 2nd and 3rd respectively in the U15 competition, and Scott Loughrey and Douglas Britton took 4th and 8th places in the U14 competition.

Hutchesons' pupils achieved three Gold, four Silver and five Bronze medals.

Gold
Matthew Kerr: U17 Triple Jump
Blair McCarte: U15 Hammer
Douglas Britton: U14 800m

Silver
Natalie Sharp: O17 1500m
Matthew Kerr: U17 Long Jump
Blair McCarte: U15 Triple Jump
Leo Milton: U14 Hammer

Bronze
Matthew Kerr: U17 High Jump
Ruaridh Bottomley: U15 400m Hurdles
Toby Buchanan: U15 Triple Jump
Scott Loughrey: U14 80m Hurdles
Adam Divers: U14 High Jump

All eight pupils, along with their Hutchesons' classmates and the wider sporting community, will benefit from the new Sports Stadium currently being built at Hutchesons'. Due to open at the end of September, the Stadium includes an international-standard Athletics Track and all-weather Hockey pitch. It is hoped that the facilities, which are at the Beaton Road Secondary School site in Pollokshields, will be used for Commonwealth Games training.

There is still time to have the name of your child, children or family inscribed on the 'Track of Honour', which will be prominently situated at the entrance to the new stadium. Contact Catherine Gillen (development@hutchesons.org or 0141 433 4457) for more information.

At Hutchesons' Senior Athletics Championships at Linwood Stadium on 8 June, the following pupils were class champions:

Senior: Matthew Kerr [S4] and Robyn Collins [S5]
S3: Blake Sinclair and Rebecca Patrick
S2: Blair McCarte and Helena McKelvie
S1: Fraser O'Rourke and Sapphire Le Sage
