Lord Hurd visits Hutchesons' to discuss latest book

Lord Hurd, former Cabinet Minister, historian and author, was the keynote speaker, with his co-author, Edward Young, at a conference for Hutchesons' staff on 25 August.

Staff enjoyed being on the other side of the classroom for a day which brought thought-provoking speakers to stimulate thought and disussion of matters beyond daily matters of the school.

In 'Choose your Weapons', Lord Hurd and Young introduced the argument that deep quarrels about foreign policy date back 200 years, when two men fought a ramshackle duel on Putney Heath. The men, Castlereagh and Canning, both Tory Ministers, survived that encounter, but their feud has continued to some extent ever since.

Rector Dr Ken Greig was impressed. "Lord Hurd's experience," he said, "at the heart of government plus his knowledge of political history, make him an incredibly interesting person to listen to."
