Chef John Quigley from Glasgow's Red Onion restaurant visited Kingarth Street just before Halloween to demonstrate how to make pumpkin soup. He showed the pupils a variety of gourds, pumpkins and squashes - all grown in Scotland. Then, taking a large pumpkin, he added some other key ingredients and simmered the the 'brew' for 20 minutes. After it had been liquidised everyone was able to sample a little of the delicious soup. The pupils and staff all agreed it was a tasty treat.
The Primary 3 classes also visited an organic dairy farm in Uplawmoor, where they were shown the barns and byres, dairy and machinery. According to Primary 3 teacher, Mary Crawford, the farmer explained that instead of regular fertilizers on his fields, he used seaweed fertiliser, as it was organic. The farm is checked regularly for use of organic products and pupils learned there are only 32 organic dairy farms in Scotland. The milk is taken to a creamery on Bute for cheese making or to Graham's diary where it is sold in cartons.
