Held for the first time in the evening, the Biggars Annual Music Competition on 24 February attracted a large and enthusiastic audience. The Biggars Cup was won by S3 pupil Hebba Benyaghla, for her performance of Beethoven's Sonata in D minor.
In another new departure this year, conductor and organist Michael Bawtree, who was adjudicator, also conducted the Sinfonia following the awards presentation.
It's clearly a difficult task having to choose between a pianist playing Shostakovich and a saxophonist playing the blues, and Bawtreee was keen to stress the high quality of all the participants - 17 pupils and five ensembles - who had reached the finals following a series of preliminary heats a couple of weeks previously.
For the last nine years, the competition has been generously sponsored by Biggars Music, which supports the School's aim to encourage pupils at all levels of attainment to strive to produce outstanding musical performances.
